The Help at Hand Support Story

– Part One: How It All Started

The Beginnings of Help at Hand Support

Help at Hand Support was founded in 2020, with its first office residing in South Morang, Mill Park. It was a humble setup, attached to a warehouse, where husband and wife – Sean and Tarina, rented the upstairs and had a small reception area downstairs. This modest beginning laid the foundation for Help at Hand Support – which is now a thriving registered disability support provider.

From Gardening to Personal Care

A change in circumstance during COVID, led Sean’s interest in gardening and DIY projects to initially shape the services offered by Help at Hand Support, with gardening and maintenance services being the first offering.

Although Sean was a qualified finance professional, back in the day he had worked at Bunnings, where he taught weekend classes on everything from building decks to changing tap fittings, so it was a natural fit to start with gardening and maintenance services.

Their first client was an older lady who used a wheelchair. She had been waiting for months to get her window trim painted white. Sean could see her frustration, and being able to help her was not just rewarding but pivotal for himself and Tarina. This experience opened their eyes to the real need for reliable support services in their community and set the stage for the company’s evolution.

A Serendipitous Journey into the Disability Sector

The disability sector wasn’t always in Sean & Tarina’s plans until this fortuitous encounter with their first maintenance client.

The sense of fulfillment which came from this encounter became a driving force for Sean & Tarina. It sparked a shared desire to create a business which could make a genuine difference in the community.

First Care Client

Sean and Tarina’s first personal care client needed help with decluttering and going out to do her shopping.

As it was their first care client, they naturally found it quite challenging, but by personally providing the care themselves, they were able to gain invaluable hands-on experience and insight into how to go about providing appropriate, compassionate, safe and individualised support,

Growth and Hiring

Realising there was a greater need for providing support, within the first two months Sean and Tarina quickly realized they needed to add to their team. Family members were the first to be hired, cementing the family-based roots of the company.

As Help at Hand Support expanded, so did its services. They moved away from gardening and cleaning due to staffing challenges and shifted their focus to personal care, complex care, community assistance and supported independent living. This evolution marked a significant growth phase for the business as their networks within the community grew and strengthened.

Evolving Goals

The initial goals for the couple were simple: to create a business that allowed for more time spent with family; to have more opportunities to work together as a family; and purely a personal fulfillment of “being able to help someone”.

As the business (and team) grew, their goals have evolved. Sean and Tarina’s ambition has now expanded to encompass these three clear objectives:

  • Creating a meaningful community impact by providing the best possible care services.
  • Creating a team of engaged and impactful staff
  • Building a business that uses smart and cutting-edge technology to enhance all business practices with the ultimate goal of creating a seamless and successful client experience.

Transformation & Expansion

From the humble roots offering a local gardening and maintenance service to what is now a full-service disability care organisation providing support across three states, Help at Hand Support’s journey so far has been marked by continuous learning, growth, underpinned by an unwavering commitment to the evolving needs of their clients.

Sean & Tarina are excited by the opportunities that lie ahead.
