Building Bridges: Disability Support for NDIS Participants with Forensic Histories

At Help at Hand Support, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to live a fulfilling and empowered life. This includes individuals with disabilities who also have a history with the criminal justice system.

Understanding the Needs

People with disabilities and a forensic background often face complex challenges. They may have unique support needs related to their disability, combined with the need for reintegration and social inclusion.

Our team of highly trained and compassionate disability support workers (DSWs) are equipped to provide individualised care that addresses these specific needs. We work closely with participants, families, and relevant professionals to develop tailored support plans that promote:

  • Independent Living: Developing skills for daily living tasks such as self-care, personal hygiene, and meal preparation.
  • Community Participation: Encouraging social interaction and engagement through community activities and programs.
  • Improved Well-being: Providing emotional and psychological support, promoting positive mental health practices.
  • Reduced Risk of Re-offending: Fostering a sense of responsibility and community belonging to help individuals navigate away from criminal activity.

Collaboration is Key

We understand that effective support involves collaboration and communication. We work alongside forensic mental health professionals, correctional services, and other stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach to each participant’s care.

This collaborative effort aims to:

  • Reduce Recidivism Rates: By providing the necessary support systems, we can help participants make positive life choices and reduce the risk of re-offending.
  • Promote Social Inclusion: Breaking down barriers and stigma allows participants to integrate back into the community with confidence.
  • Separate Pathways: When applying for the NDIS, the NDIA will assess whether you meet the disability, early intervention, or both requirements. This change creates new participant pathways, such as for those who benefit from early intervention.

Making a Difference, One Step at a Time

At Help at Hand Support, we believe everyone has the potential to live a meaningful life. Our dedicated disability support workers are committed to providing the support and guidance needed for NDIS participants with a forensic history to build a brighter future.
