The Support at Home program is a new aged care reform launching in July 2025, designed to offer flexible in-home support for older Australians. It is not a replacement for residential aged care but aims to delay or avoid it by supporting independence.Extra Support at Home Packages Announced

How Many Extra Home Care Packages Are Being Released?

83,000 new home care packages will be introduced in the first year, marking the largest investment in home support for aged care to date.

This expansion is expected to reduce current waitlists and ease pressure on aged care services.

What Are the Key Changes in the New System?

The Support at Home program will introduce the following key reforms to improve aged care delivery at home.

The new changes are as listed below.

  • Ten funding categories will replace the current four-tier system for greater personalisation.
  • The 76,000 people on the waitlist will continue under the old program until July 2025.
  • Cost-sharing model: Clinical care remains fully funded; other supports may include small co-payments, subsidised mainly by the government.

Will the New Packages Reduce Wait Times?

Yes, but not immediately. The government aims to bring down waitlists to three months by 2027, but some users may still experience long delays during the transition.

At present, some older Australians wait up to 15 months for a Level 4 package.

Is the Government Addressing Aged Care Workforce Shortages?

Yes. A major part of the reform includes boosting the workforce.

A $15 billion pay rise for aged care workers is already having an impact on staff recruitment and retention, especially in remote and rural areas.

When Will the ‘Support at Home’ Program Begin?

The program is set to begin in July 2025, following the passage of the Aged Care Bill 2024.

Over time, the government aims to create a system that is faster, fairer, and more flexible for families and older Australians.
