As we settle into August, we find ourselves gently moving toward the end of winter. It’s a time when many of us begin to feel a little worn out, tired from the cold, the short days, and the sense that the year is flying by. For participants and support workers alike, this time of year can bring a quiet emotional weight that often goes unnoticed.

At Help at Hand Support, we believe it’s important to pause, reflect, and care for our mental wellbeing, especially when we’re more than halfway through the year. August offers us a beautiful opportunity to reconnect with our goals, restore our energy, and prepare for the brighter days of spring.

Why August Can Feel Heavy

It’s common to feel low in motivation during the colder months. The “winter blues” can affect mood, energy levels, and even how we connect with others. For some people, it’s also the time when pressure starts to build, looking back at the year so far and feeling like things haven’t gone to plan.

How to Gently Reconnect With Your Wellbeing

Whether you’re receiving support or providing it, here are some simple, comforting ways to look after your mental and emotional wellbeing during August:

  1. Celebrate Small Wins
Think about the little things that have gone well this year. Even a moment of courage, a positive routine, or a new connection is worth celebrating.
  2. Try Indoor Self-Care Activities
Warm up your day with activities like journaling, art, reading, or gentle exercise. Music, puzzles, and mindfulness exercises can also help lift your mood.
  3. Get Some Winter Sun
On brighter days, even a short walk or sitting in the sun with a warm drink can boost your energy and calm your mind.
  4. Stay Connected
Reach out to loved ones, support workers, or community groups. A kind conversation or shared moment can make all the difference.
  5. Rest Without Guilt
Allow yourself space to rest. Winter is a natural time to slow down and gather strength, and that’s perfectly okay.

Preparing for Spring, One Step at a Time

While we’re still in winter, now is a lovely time to start thinking about what spring might bring. Whether it’s spending more time outdoors, starting a garden, or planning creative outings with your support worker, you can begin planting seeds of joy for the season ahead.

You might also consider setting a gentle goal for the coming months, something that brings you purpose, even if it’s small. Growth doesn’t have to be fast to be meaningful.

A Kind Reminder for Participants, Support Coordinators, Support Workers, and Everyone in the NDIS Space

To all the wonderful people involved in the NDIS community, thank you for the important role you play. August can feel challenging not only for participants but also for support coordinators, support workers, and everyone who helps make this system work.

Please remember to check in with yourself, take time to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with your purpose. Your wellbeing matters just as much as the people you support and work alongside.
