School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) under the NDIS help young participants move confidently from school into work by providing practical skill-building and tailored support.
The SLES program aims to ensure every participant has the same employment opportunities as other Australians, gaining the confidence and tools needed to reach their work goals.

What the NDIS Report Shows?
The latest NDIS Provider Quarterly Report on School Leaver Employment outlines how dedicated support under SLES can lead to long-term, meaningful employment.
From January to December 2024, the report recorded:
- 7,580 participants received employment transition assistance.
- 2,847 participants commenced employment supports during the year.
- 2,262 participants exited the program, of which:
- 21% achieved open employment outcomes.
- 12% pursued further studies or volunteer work.
- 3% moved into supported employment.
These statistics show that structured, skill-focused support has measurable success in helping young people gain independence through work.
What these NDIS findings mean for participants
The data confirm that access to personalised SLES significantly increases the likelihood of finding sustainable employment after school.
What Works Best in SLES?
The NDIS report highlights that nearly 47% of total support hours were spent building social, presentation, communication, and work skills — all essential for entering the workforce.
Participants received support through a mix of delivery methods:
- Group-based activities: 51% of support time.
- One-to-one sessions: 47% of support time.
- Online or remote delivery: 1% of support time.
How focused skill-building impacts employment
Participants who spent more time in skill-specific training were more likely to achieve significant progress in:
- Employer engagement and job customisation.
- Work experience and workplace readiness.
- Practical job skills and confidence-building.
This shows that consistent, hands-on support leads to better employment outcomes and a smoother transition from school to adulthood.
