Community connections play an important role in creating a more inclusive world, where people living with disabilities feel heard, supported and empowered to pursue their goals.
On 29 October 2026, Help at Hand Support Services was pleased to attend the Sunbury Community Disability Expo, hosted by The Disability Events Community (DEC) at the Hume Global Learning Centre in Sunbury.
The event brought together people living with disabilities, families, guardians, carers, support workers and disability service providers, creating a welcoming space to exchange knowledge, explore support options and strengthen connections within the local community.
For Help at Hand, being part of events like these is an opportunity to connect beyond our everyday services, listen to different experiences and continue building relationships with the people and organisations that make up the disability sector.
Bringing Disability Services Closer to the Community
Finding the right disability support can sometimes feel overwhelming, particularly for individuals and families navigating the NDIS or exploring available services for the first time.
Community expos help make this process more approachable by bringing different providers and services together in one place.
The Sunbury Community Disability Expo provided an opportunity for attendees to learn about a range of services, including allied health, therapy, housing solutions and everyday disability support.
These conversations can help participants and families better understand their options, ask questions and identify services that may align with their individual circumstances.
We believe that access to the right information is an important part of making informed decisions about support.
More Than Networking: Creating Meaningful Connections
One of the most valuable aspects of disability community events is the opportunity to build relationships.
Meaningful support often starts with a conversation. Listening to participants, understanding family perspectives and connecting with other professionals allows us to gain a broader understanding of the needs within our communities.
For disability providers, these connections also create opportunities to share knowledge, exchange ideas and develop professional relationships that can benefit participants over time.
At Help at Hand, we value genuine relationships built on trust, communication and a shared commitment to improving the lives of people living with disabilities.
Promoting Choice, Independence and Inclusion
Every participant has their own goals, preferences, routines and aspirations. Disability support should reflect these individual differences rather than follow a one-size-fits-all approach.
Events like the Sunbury Community Disability Expo help reinforce the importance of:
- Choice and control: Ensuring participants have a voice in decisions about their support.
- Independence: Encouraging individuals to develop confidence and everyday living skills.
- Community participation: Creating opportunities to engage in social activities and connect with others.
- Accessibility: Making information, services and support options easier to discover.
- Person-centred care: Recognising each individual beyond their disability and understanding what matters to them.
These values are central to creating communities where everyone has the opportunity to participate and feel included.
The importance of Family and Carer Involvement
Families, guardians and carers play an important role in supporting people living with disabilities.
They often have valuable insights into an individual’s preferences, communication styles, daily routines and support requirements.
Community events provide families and carers with an opportunity to explore available services, speak directly with providers and learn about different approaches to disability support.
Having access to these conversations can help families feel more informed and confident when considering the next steps in their loved one’s support journey.
At Help at Hand, we recognise the importance of working collaboratively with participants and the people who matter to them, while respecting each participant’s choices, independence and individual goals.
Connecting Community Relationships to Ongoing NDIS Support
The value of a disability expo does not end when the event finishes. The conversations and relationships developed can contribute to stronger connections and more informed support decisions in the future.
By attending local community events, we gain opportunities to better understand the needs of different communities, identify service gaps and connect with other organisations that share a commitment to inclusion.
For Help at Hand, these connections support our ongoing commitment to providing personalised disability support across the communities we serve.
Whether someone requires assistance with personal care, daily living activities or community access, the focus remains on understanding the individual and providing support that works around their life.
Continuing our Commitment to the Disability Community
We would like to thank The Disability Events Community (DEC) for organising the Sunbury Community Disability Expo and bringing together individuals, families and service providers.
We appreciate the opportunity to be part of an event that encourages open conversations, promotes awareness and strengthens the connections that make local communities more inclusive.
At Help at Hand Support Services, we look forward to continuing to attend community events, meet new people and build relationships that contribute to meaningful, ongoing support.
Because genuine support starts with understanding people, building trust and being part of their community.
