The Hornsby Community Disability Expo returned for its second year, bringing together people living with disability, their families, guardians and support workers with local disability providers under one roof. Held at Magpies Waitara, the free community event gave attendees the chance to ask questions, compare services and make real connections face to face. Help at Hand was there for the day, joining a range of local providers across allied health, therapy, housing and everyday support.

Back for Round Two

A second year running says something about how an event like these lands with a community. Hornsby’s expo has clearly found its footing, drawing a solid mix of long-time locals, families new to the NDIS, and support workers keen to widen their referral networks.

That kind of momentum maters. A first-year event proves there’s an appetite; a second year proves people found it worth coming back for. It always gives organisers room to fine-tune the format based on what worked the first round, and it gives returning providers the chance to reconnect with families they met the year before and see how circumstances or goals have shifted.

Word of mouth plays a big part in that growth too. Expos like this tend to build their audience less through advertising and more through people telling other people it was with their afternoon.

Who the Day Was For

Events like this work because they’re genuinely open to anyone touching the disability sector in some way. People living with disability came through looking for practical answers, whether that was about a specific therapy, a housing pathway, or simply which local providers were worth a phone call. Carers and guardians came with their own set of questions, often on behalf of someone else, and support workers moved through the stalls building out their own referral shortlists for clients they support day to day.

That mix is part of what makes an expo different from a single provider’s information session — nobody in the room is limited to one perspective or one provider’s answer.

Support Under One Roof

The expo brought together a genuine cross section of the disability sector, allied health and therapy providers, housing specialists, everyday support services and more, all in one space. For attendees, that meant no bouncing between websites or waiting on call backs to get a straight answer.

Being able to walk up to a stall, ask a direct question and get an honest answer on the spot tends to move things along faster than any amount of online research.

Conversation Worth Having

Some attendees came with a specific question already in mind, a therapy referral, a support worker they weren’t quite happy with. Others were still working out where to start. Either way, face-to-face conversation gave people the chance to ask a follow up questions immediately, rather than starting another email thread and waiting for days for a reply.

Networking for Providers

Expo days aren’t only useful for families and participants. Stallholders spent time chatting between themselves too, swapping referral pathways and getting to know other providers working across the Hornsby area.

Those conversations rarely make it into a recap, but they quietly strengthen the local sector long after the doors close.

How does this connect to Ongoing NDIS Support

At Help at Hand Support Services, attending community disability expos is about more than simply showcasing our services. These events allow us to strengthen relationships within the local community, better understand the evolving needs of participants and families, and connect people with the supports that best suit their individual goals.

By participating in events like the Hornsby Community Disability Expo, we encourage informed choice, open conversations and stronger community connections. These experiences help us continue delivering personalised, high-quality NDIS support that empowers participants to live with greater independence, confidence and choice.
