The Disability Events Community (DEC) headed to Croydon in 2026 for the Melbourne East Community Disability Expo, bringing together people living with disability, their families, guardians and support workers with a wide range of local disability providers. Help at Hand was on hand for the day, joining the expo alongside state sponsor NDSP, who continue to help connect communities across Victoria.
A Chance to Compare, Not Just Collect Brochures
Rather than leaving with a stack of pamphlets and no clearer idea of where to start, attendees could talk face-to-face with providers across allied health, therapy, housing and everyday support services. For a lot of people, that direct conversation is worth more than anything a website or phone call can offer.
Networking Goes Both Ways
The expo wasn’t only about participants and families finding support — it also gave local providers a chance to meet each other, swap notes and build the kind of relationships that make referrals and collaboration easier down the track. Days like this quietly strengthen the wider disability sector across Melbourne’s east, not just the individual connections made on the floor.
A Warm Start, Thanks to Graman Support
The first 200 attendees through the door were treated to a free barista-made coffee, tea or hot chocolate courtesy of Graman Support. It’s a small touch, but it set a relaxed, welcoming tone before a single conversation had even started.
Room to Move at Your Own Pace
Expos can be a lot to take in — new faces, new information, a full day of conversations. The Melbourne East Community Disability Expo gave attendees the freedom to move through at their own pace, spend as long as they needed at each stand, and step away for a breather when they needed one. That kind of flexibility makes a genuine difference for participants who find busy, high-stimulus environments harder to navigate.
Supporting Melbourne’s East, Closer to Home
Events like this matter most for the people who don’t want to travel across the city just to find the right support. Having a day where local providers are gathered in one place, in Croydon, means families can explore options without the extra stress of a long drive or an unfamiliar part of town. It’s a reminder that good support shouldn’t depend on how far someone is willing to travel to find it.
The Ripple Effect
Days like this rarely end when the doors close. A conversation at a stand can turn into a referral, a referral into a service that changes someone’s day-to-day life, and that change ripples out to families, carers and the wider community around them. It’s a good reminder that the value of an expo isn’t just what happens on the floor — it’s everything that follows.
Not Just for Participants — A Day for the Whole Support Network
Family members, guardians and support workers all had just as much reason to be there as participants themselves. Many of the conversations on the day weren’t about immediate needs but about planning ahead — understanding what’s available before a change in circumstances makes it urgent. Having that information early, from real people rather than a search engine, makes future decisions easier for everyone involved.
Looking Ahead
Expos like this one are becoming a regular fixture across Melbourne’s east, and that consistency matters. The more often local providers, participants and families cross paths in settings like this, the stronger and more connected the local disability sector becomes. Help at Hand looks forward to being part of the next one.
