Help at Hand Support recently attended the Pakenham Community Disability Expo, hosted by Disability Events Community.
The event held on 7 May 2026, at Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham marked an exciting opportunity for our team to connect with the Pakenham community and build new relationships with participants, carers and local providers.
What a day it turned out to be — and not just for the weather! The drive down was a proper Victorian experience: rain bucketing down, hail hammering the roof, and the kind of conditions that make you seriously consider whether the heater can go any higher. We took it slow and steady, drove safely, and arrived right on time. Because that’s what you do — you show up for the community, rain, hail, or shine.
And we’re so glad we did. The Pakenham Disability Expo 2026 delivered everything a great community event should: a welcoming venue, genuine conversations, and more than a few moments that put a big smile on everyone’s face. The Help at Hand Support Services team walked away energised, connected, and with a long list of wonderful new relationships to build on.
A Venue That Delivered
From the moment we stepped inside the Cardinia Cultural Centre, it was clear this was a well-chosen venue. The space was large, open, and beautifully laid out — giving every exhibitor room to breathe and every attendee the freedom to explore at their own pace. The friendly, welcoming atmosphere was palpable from the start, with staff, providers, and participants all clearly happy to be there.
The Cardinia Cultural Centre is a genuinely impressive facility, and we took some time throughout the day to explore what it has to offer. It’s the kind of place that reflects the best of what a local community hub can be — versatile, inclusive, and filled with interesting spaces.
A Little Piece of Gaming History
One of the most unexpected and delightful surprises of the day was discovering an area set up with approximately 10 to 12 arcade gaming machines running classic Street Fighter II titles. We’re talking proper upright arcade cabinets, joysticks and all. It was a complete nostalgia trip — a chance to revisit those school-day gaming memories and share a moment of pure, uncomplicated fun.
Watching participants, providers, and families line up for a round or two was genuinely joyful. It broke the ice, sparked conversations, and reminded everyone that connection doesn’t always need a formal setting. Sometimes all it takes is a shared love of a classic fighting game.
The Animals Stole the Show
If there was one thing that had everyone talking, it was the animals. And there were plenty of them — therapy dogs, goats, rabbits, and chickens all made an appearance, and the reaction from attendees was absolutely wonderful.
Therapy animals are well known for the comfort and joy they bring to people with disability, and seeing that in action was a powerful reminder of how effective these connections can be. But it wasn’t just the therapy dogs that captured hearts — the goats, rabbits, and chickens drew a crowd of their own, with plenty of laughter, petting, and yes, quite a few great photos taken throughout the day.
It was one of those touches that transforms a good expo into a truly memorable one. Hats off to everyone who brought their animals along — you made the day that much more special.
Coffee, Courtesy of the DEC
A special mention to the DEC team for taking care of everyone’s coffee needs on the day. Having complimentary coffee available was a thoughtful touch that kept energy levels up and conversations flowing. There’s something about a warm cup in hand that makes every interaction just a little more relaxed and genuine.
It was a small but meaningful gesture that reflected the DEC’s commitment to making their events welcoming and enjoyable for all who attend.
Real Connections With the Pakenham Community
At the heart of any expo is the opportunity to connect — and the Pakenham event delivered on this front in a big way. We had the chance to speak with a number of providers and participants who were local to the Pakenham area, and those conversations were exactly the kind we come to these events for.
There’s something different about meeting people face to face in their own community. It allows for a more genuine conversation, a better understanding of local needs, and the kind of trust that takes much longer to build online. Every participant and family we spoke with had their own unique story, their own goals, and their own questions — and we were genuinely honoured to be part of those conversations.
