Getting ready for your NDIS planning meeting is one of the most important steps in getting the right supports in place. This meeting shapes your plan, your funding, and your everyday life.Â
If you go in prepared, you are far more likely to receive a plan that truly reflects your needs and goals.Â

What is a NDIS planning meeting?
A NDIS planning meeting is a conversation with a planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) about your life, current supports, and what you need moving forward.
You will talk about your daily activities, challenges, supports, and future goals.
Why preparation matters
This is your chance to explain your situation clearly. The NDIS uses what you share to decide what supports are reasonable and necessary, so being prepared can directly impact your funding.Â
How to prepare
- Be clear on your goals –Â Think about what you want to achieve, such as independence, social participation, or employment.
- Review your current supports –Â Consider what is working, what is not, and where you need more help.
- Gather reports –Â Bring any medical or therapy reports that support your needs.
- Write notes –Â List your daily challenges, supports you need, and any questions so you do not forget anything. This is very important as having detailed notes help with having real world experience to quantify the help you need.
- Bring support –Â You can have a family member, friend, or support worker attend with you.
Phone planning tips
If your meeting is over the phone:
- Find a quiet space
- Have your documents ready
- Make sure your phone is charged
Tip if you are not ready or don’t feel comfortable ask to reschedule the meeting to a time thats suitable for you. If you have support coordinator ask for them to be able to attend the meeting with you.
During and after the meeting
During the meeting, speak openly, ask questions, and make sure everything important is covered.
Afterwards, your plan will be finalised and you will be guided on how to start using your supports.
Final tips
- Be honest about your challenges
- Explain how your disability affects your daily life
- Take your time and do not rush
- Remember to ask for more, as you may not get everything you may need so better to ask than not ask for help.
